Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
WHAT IS FLOK AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Flok is a long-distance ridesharing mobile app (iOS) that features custom ridesharing communities for music festivals and professional sports teams. Our mission is to help you connect with people from your city who are travelling to the same game or festival as you.
Those driving to the event who have extra seats in their car can offer them to others who need a ride. The Passengers help the Drivers cover the cost of the trip (gas, maintenance, insurance, etc.), and both get to meet fellow music or sports fans and start the party early along the way!
I WANNA FLOK, BUT I DON'T HAVE AN IPHONE AND CAN'T GET YOUR APP. WHAT DO I DO?
Get an iPhone.
Just kidding. We are working on our Android version of our app and can’t wait to share it with you! In the meantime, if you have a really good friend/relative that has an iPhone, you can sign up for an account on their phone. They’ll just have to track any updates and/or messages you receive. (That’s why we mean really good). If you do end up doing this, we highly suggest you exchange mobile numbers with the people in your car before the trip in case anything comes up last minute.
Oh, and if you’re REALLY stuck in 1999 and don’t have a iPhone or Android, we will eventually get to you too. Web version of Flok is coming soon as well. (PS - no judgement. One of our co-founder’s dad still checks for a dial tone every time he borrows someone’s cell phone).
I’M THINKING I MIGHT WANT TO FLOK, BUT WANT TO KNOW WHO I WOULD BE TRAVELING WITH.
The whole idea behind Flok is that you’ll be travelling with people you know you have something in common with (so things don’t get awkward…).
Flok is built of ridesharing communities - and each community evolves around a music festival or sport team. So, the other people in the car are either going to the same festival as you or are fans of the same team as you.
Everyone on the app is also encouraged to complete their profile so that fellow Flok’ers can learn a little bit more about them - age, occupation, relationship status, profile photo, bio, etc.
CAN I USE FLOK TO GET TO AND FROM A FESTIVAL OR GAME?
For sure!
If you’re a Driver, just post two different trips (one there and back). It may work out that you may have the same Passengers, or it may be different people.
If you’re a Passenger, just search for and book two separate trips for there and back.
I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS. HOW DO I CONTACT YOU?
We would love to chat. Chatting’s our favourite! You can email us at hello@weflok.com, or call us at 1.800.368.3565.
PRICING
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO USE FLOK?
Right now, it is totally free! Drivers will post their trip, including a requested seat price to help cover travel costs, and Passengers will be asked to bring cash for this on the day of their trip. Flok does not collect anything extra at this time.
The app itself is also free to download.
HOW ARE THE SEAT PRICES CALCULATED IN THE APP?
Our system generates a suggested trip price based on distance travelled and number of seats available. We use a variable pricing model that accounts for all the travellers involved - the more Passengers that join a trip, the less it costs everyone else!
The Driver selects their variable pricing on a sliding scale, so they can choose a slightly lower or slightly higher cost, as long as it stays within the cost of travel.[1]
For those of you who like numbers and graphs, and maths and stuff, here’s how it’s calculated:
PRICE CALCULATIONS: (Note: our system rounds to the nearest dollar)
EXAMPLE TRIP: 300KM (Prices are rounded to the nearest dollar)
WHO PAYS FOR PARKING, FERRIES, TOLLS, OR OTHER MISCELLANEOUS COSTS?
The prices in our app only consider base travel costs (gas, maintenance, insurance) and therefore exclude any ferry or toll that you will travel through.
Drivers: please remind your Passengers of any ferries, tolls, or other costs you’re aware of and outline it in the “Notes” of the trip. For parking costs in particular, please use good judgement ahead of time to decide if it’s fair to ask Passengers to contribute. If they’re not travelling both ways with you, it may not be. Please be transparent on your expectations.
Passengers: please come prepared to pay your portion of any of these extra costs.
TRUST & SAFETY
HOW DO YOU SCREEN THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS?
Users on our app are required to complete the following prior to booking or posting a trip:
● Sign up with their email or Facebook account
● Verify their mobile phone number
● Enter their full name (*only first name and last initial are displayed)
● Add a profile photo
● Add car details (Drivers only)
Additionally, at the end of every trip, all the Passengers rate the Driver, and the Driver rates all the Passengers. All ratings will be visible to all other users on the app.... So don’t be a bad Flok!
DO I GET THE FINAL SAY OF WHO IS IN MY VEHICLE?
Passengers looking for rides will be able to see the profile and past reviews of the Driver and any other Passengers already booked in the car. So, you can choose whomever looks great to you.
For Drivers, if someone books a seat in your car that you’re not pumped about, you can contact us at 1.800.368.3565 or hello@weflok.com and we’ll politely remove whomever you request.
IS RIDESHARING WITH FLOK LEGAL, AND DOES MY CAR INSURANCE COVER ME AND MY PASSENGERS?
The short answer is YES! Flok’s technology provides a true cost-sharing model (not a profit model) for those sharing the ride, keeping it within regulations.
Generally, ridesharing is legal with respect to the following criteria:
● The Driver would have made the trip regardless of if others joined in
● The payment from the Passenger(s) merely contributes to the cost of travel, and are not providing the Driver with “profit” beyond his/her travel costs
All this said, it is the responsibility of the Driver to contact their insurance provider to ensure that they are travelling within the restrictions of their plan. The Passengers can request to see the Driver’s insurance papers before starting on the trip.
I ONLY FEEL COMFORTABLE TRAVELING WITH OTHER FEMALES/MALES. CAN I DO THIS?
If you’re a Passenger, you can seek out a Driver of the gender of your choice. If you’re a Driver and have any parameters for your Passengers, please include this in the “Notes” section of the ride posting.
I’D PREFER NOT TO SHARE MY PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION WITH THE DRIVER/PASSENGERS. IS THERE A WAY AROUND THIS?
Our app has a built-in chat system so that you can message your Driver/Passengers to connect on the details of the trip - or just get to know one another! This includes direct messages between Passengers and their Driver, and a group message with everyone in the car.
So, in other words, there’s no need to provide any other contact details with anyone, unless you choose to.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE GET A PARKING/SPEEDING/TRAFFIC TICKET? WHO PAYS FOR IT?
Please discuss this with the people in your car ahead of time. We suggest that the Driver holds the responsibility to ensure there are not violations, and therefore should cover the cost of any tickets.
WE WILL BE TRAVELING ACROSS A BORDER FOR OUR TRIP. WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW?
To cross a border by car (i.e. US/Canada), everyone travelling must ensure they carry the proper identification (passports, visas, etc.) and comply with any other entrance restrictions. Drivers are responsible for what and who is in their cars, so they are entitled to check that every passenger possesses valid identification and, if they choose, inspect all pieces of luggage. Passengers are also entitled to request verification that their Driver has a driving license and the vehicle is insured.
Asking for such information may be difficult, but it is recommended in some cases -- please use your best judgment. Before departure, you reserve the right to refuse to travel with anyone who does not have proper documentation, or that you are uncomfortable with in any other way.
If you are stopped by the police or at the border, it is important to insist on the fact that you do not know your travel companions and have only used our app to rideshare. In the rare case that any issue arises, it is simple for us to prove that you did not know the person initially and that the connection to this person was only for a shared ride. If needed, we will provide all necessary documentation to the authorities and help in any other way we can.
FOR DRIVERS
I HAVE EXTRA SEATS AND AM DRIVING TO ONE OF YOUR FEATURED FESTIVALS OR GAMES. CAN I BE A DRIVER?
You betcha. Just make sure your license and insurance policies are up-to-date, sign up for our app, choose the ridesharing community for your chosen festival or game to which you’d like to travel. Then, click the “+” button on the top right on the community screen and we’ll take you through the process to post your first ride! Trust us -- it’s simple.
WHO WILL MY PASSENGERS BE?
They’ll be other people from your city who are going to the same festival or game as you. Everyone on the app is attached to a profile, so you can see their photo, read their bio, and even chat with them on our in-app messaging system. Make the trip even better by taking advantage of all this and getting to know them before you depart!
You’ll of course have final say on who you choose to come with you. If someone books a seat in your car that you’re not pumped about, you can contact us at 1.800.368.3565 or hello@weflok.com and we’ll politely remove whomever you request.
HOW MUCH WILL I GET PAID? HOW DO I GET PAID?
When you post your trip, our app will suggest a price to you based on the distance of the trip and the number of seats you have available. You will then be able to increase or decrease this price as you choose. Flok is all about true ridesharing -- meaning true cost sharing -- so the price will be capped to ensure you do not exceed the cost of travel. You are not a taxi: Make friends, not customers! (Please see the above “PRICING” section on the details of the price calculations.)
Passengers are asked to show up to the trip with cash in hand to contribute to the trip.
WHY AM I ONLY ALLOWED TO SELL UP TO 3 SEATS? I WANT TO SELL MORE.
Right now, we restrict the number of seats you can sell for a trip to 3 to ensure that it’s a comfortable ride for all your Passengers.
If you have any suggestions or feedback on this, we’re always thrilled to hear from our users. Drop us a line at hello@weflok.com
I POSTED A TRIP, BUT MY PLANS FELL THROUGH AND I NEED TO CANCEL IT. WHAT DO I DO?

2. Click the ROAD icon on the bottom bar (second from the left)

FOR PASSENGERS
I’M TRYING TO GET TO A FESTIVAL OR GAME, AND WEIGHING MY OPTIONS. WHY SHOULD I USE FLOK INSTEAD OF THE BUS, TRAIN, OR PLANE?
Flok’s mission is not just about ridesharing. It’s about socializing. Not only do we seek to connect you with people who are going the same way as you, but with awesome people who you know you have something in common with -- they’re fans of the same sports team, or are heading to the same amazing festival as you. It’s not just a road trip; it’s like networking (or dating?) on wheels.
Not to mention: of all the other travel options, Flok will almost always be the cheapest, most flexible, and often the fasted too.
I WANNA FLOK IN THE SAME RIDE AS MY FRIEND. CAN I BOOK THEM A SEAT TOO?
For security purposes, every Passenger must sign up for their own profile and book their own seat. This will allow the Driver and any other Passenger to see who exactly will be in the car.
So, have them sign up for a profile in our app, and then both book a ride that has two empty seats at the same time. If on the off chance that you don’t get into the same ride, you can always cancel and re-book with another Driver.
